Washington, Georgia, is located in Wilkes County, 100 miles east of Atlanta, between Athens and Augusta.

  "Is that D.C. or state?" is a typical response a citizen of Washington, Georgia, receives after stating the name of his or her hometown as simply "Washington." The answer, of course, is neither! Washington is the county seat of Wilkes County and is located in the state of Georgia, one of the original 13 colonies.

Driving Directions
From Atlanta, take I-20 east 74 miles to GA 44 - Greensboro. GA 44 east goes to Washington, but with a few turns. From the exit go east 3 miles to Greensboro and turn right, still following GA 44 east to Union Point (7 miles). In Union Point you must take a left turn to stay on GA 44 east to Washington (24 miles). Travel time: about 2 hours

From Augusta, take I-20 west to US 78 - Thompson and go west to Washington (21 miles). Travel time: about 1 hour
