Birthsite of Alexander Hamilton Stephens

  "Little Alec," Vice-President of the Confederacy was born nearby in a log cabin Feb. 11, 1812, son of Andrew B. & Margaret Grier Stephens, a poor farm family. At his parents' death he was educated by an uncle, Gen. A. W. Grier, at Washington, and Franklin College (U> of Ga.) and was admitted to the Bar in 1832. He served as state legislator & senator from '36 to '42, as Congressman from '43 to '49 and again in 1855. After the War he was elected U. S. Senator but was not allowed to take his seat. He served in Congress from '73 until '82 and was Gov. of Georgia at his death in 1883. "He was strong by his moral intrepidity."

Follow US 278 east 0.4 miles, turn left on GA 47/Sharon Road. Turn left immediately beyond the railroad track and follow road 0.2 miles, turn right on Old Sandy Cross Road and follow 2.1 miles to marker OR from GA 47 follow for 2.1 miles, turn left on Sandy Cross Road for 1.5 miles, turn left on A H. Stephens Road and travel 0.9 miles.
